Would you rather go to the lumber store, buy some cherry wood, finish it and hang the shelves on your wall or buy a premade system from Ikea that takes 30 minutes to put together? Would you rather unclog your own toilet, or call a plumber. Change your oil or take it to Jiffy Lube.Continue reading “Shooting Film For the Handyman”

The Ghost Of Venice
I met a nice and interesting person today. Named the “Ghost of Venice.” From Georgia born in 1945 but living in Venice for the last 40 years. He was walking down the beach towards the Santa Monica Pier in a Speedo carrying some tote bags. He had a very long white beard. I knew instantlyContinue reading “The Ghost Of Venice”
New Challenges
I’ve thought a lot about why I like to do street photography. Ultimately at the root, it’s because it’s challenging. Until it’s not. At this point in my photo journey, I can come back with a few good photos anytime I shoot. I live in a very fruitful area and maybe my standards are tooContinue reading “New Challenges”
Getting bored…
with my photos. Time to switch it up. I don’t know what that means exactly. I did buy some film, getting back into that but its not enough. I need to do something with my compositions.
You’re not complete until…
you are wearing a Leica around your neck dressed in full Lululemon. The Gucci of Santa Monica. You can easily store extra batteries and film in your zippered pockets. No more need for skinny skins, fake vintage concert tees from Urban Outfitters, trendy hats and old patina leather bags you found at your favorite vintageContinue reading “You’re not complete until…”
Technically Bad
This photo is out of focus and shot on my Ricoh GRDIV which uses an iPhone sized sensor. But who cares, I think it looks great. The colors and scene are nice and dare I say look FILMIC.
My Ilford HP5 Plus Look
I love the look of film. My dream is to make my digital images look like film. For color photos, this seems like a lost battle. But for black and white, I think using my Leica M8 looks close. What do you think?
Film Really Is The Best Look
It just looks the best. Porta 400 looks amazing in any light. HP5 is gritty and edgy. It’s just too expensive and the workflow takes too much time for me. If I was a landscape or portrait photographer, I’d most definitely shoot film. But I shoot everyday. Usually at least 50 photos. I couldn’t affordContinue reading “Film Really Is The Best Look”
Fishing Is Lame. Get Off The Crosswalk
Go hunting, it’s a lot more fun and good exercise. We kinda look creepy leaning on lamp posts with our cameras ready for the next character to cross the street. I used to do this a lot. I’d stay on one corner for 30 minutes just waiting. Waiting for the special moment, that never happens.Continue reading “Fishing Is Lame. Get Off The Crosswalk”
Koreatown on Ilford HP5 PLUS
Koreatown Los Angeles is the most densely populated neighborhood in LA. You’d think it would be flooded with people taking photos, but I very rarely saw anyone doing this. I lived there with my better half in early 2021. It was the height of Covid and I was pretty bad at taking photos. These areContinue reading “Koreatown on Ilford HP5 PLUS”
