Feels great to dive into an alternate reality. Maybe I want to escape my own reality occasionally.
Competition Is Good
1st place is the best place.
My GRIV Wishlist
60 megapixel sensor so I can have 75 and 90mm crop modes.
More durable.
Weather sealing.
A monochrome version.
That’s it, I don’t care about anything else. The top two would be a big improvement. Second pair would be nice but no big deal if it didn’t happen.
Leica Q3 Versus GRIII Comparison
Quick comparison and further evidence that the GR is the best.
Size/Weight: GR by a mile
IQ/Sensor: Q3 but negligibly better. I prefer smaller sensors for street photography as I prefer shooting with a large depth of field.
Lens: Q3 by a mile. The lux is marvelous but also much bigger than the GR.
Ergonomics: GR by a mile. The Q3 is a two handed camera. It can be used with one hand but it’s four times the weight as the GR and gets very heavy.
Crop modes: Q3 but functionality is limited since frame lines are so small at the 75 and 90mm crops.
SOC JPEGS: GR by a mile. It’s Fuji level good.
Autofocus: Q3 but negligible. GR is nearly as snappy in good light. Not sure about low light.
Manual Focus: GR by a mile. I can easily change focus with the wheel using one hand. Q3 is a two handed camera although the focus by wire in the Q3 is very nice.
Weather sealing: Q3 by a mile
Build quality: Q3 by a mile. GRs are delicate little flowers.
Sensor size: GR. Smaller sensors are better for my street photography. I don’t care about depth of field.
LCD: GR. I don’t care about a flip screen. I shoot blind a lot and like the random photos I get like that. The Q3 LCD screen is probably better but the GR is more than good enough for me.
Startup Time: GR by a mile.
Battery Life: Q3 by a mile. GR batteries are a third of the size so it’s not big deal to carry extra ones.
The Q3 is seven times the price and marginally better in a few areas I don’t even care about. GRIII for the big win.
The Leica Q3
I played around with the Q3 for a bit. It’s nice but there 0% chance I’d ever replace my GR with it. The ONLY thing that is clearly better for my style of photography is the 60mp sensor. I could shoot from 28mm to 90mm with crop mode which is cool. But even then they have framelines on each crop which is dumb because it’s not an M camera. 75 and 90mm crop is ridiculously small. Leaving space outside the frame is for people glued to the viewfinder. I prefer using the LCD screen.
Who Cares About Dynamic Range
I went to the Leica store a few days ago. One of the guys showed me a photo that was severely underexposed by around four stops. Then showed me how it was usable by lifting the shadows. Who cares. I’ve probably messed up exposure that bad 10 times in my life. Just shoot P mode and it’s all good.
