Why Not More LA Street Photographers?

There’s a small group here. I rarely see street photographers in Santa Monica or Venice. Whenever I go to DTLA, I’ll usually see a few but nothing like New York. I suspect that it’s because people don’t move here to specifically shoot street photography like they do in NYC. Good for me though as it’s easier to make unique work.

My Camera Gear

I’ve finally rid myself of all the unnecessary camera gear I’ve accumulated over the last four years. This morning I mailed the rest of the gear to MPB in exchange for a lens. I now own only two camera bodies and one lens (with one on the way from MPB). My gear is now so simple and fun to use.

Ricoh GRIII. Best street camera ever and by far. Yep, by far. At least for how I like to shoot. Nothing comes close. Small and discrete and takes great photos. JPEGs are amazing. If Olympus or Panasonic releases a small rangefinder style camera without an EVF and fast readout speed it could be in the conversation with the GR.

Olympus EM5 Mark III. This is such a beast of a camera. I got it mainly for my hiking trips as it’s got great weather sealing and very tiny. But today I took it out for street photography using a 9mm pancake fisheye lens and it performed. Still pocketable and also great JPEGs. Now I’m just waiting on my do it all 12-100mm Olympus zoom lens I got for a big upcoming Utah trip.

So that’s it. No more Leica, Fuji, Canon, Sony and a bunch of lenses. Keeping it as small and minimal as possible.
