Order breeds spontaneity

I was thinking about why I can never really buckle down and do a traditional photo project. Photograph the same subject, visit the same location over and over, or work on something specific until I have a body of work.

I think it comes down to how organized my life is.

Ever since I moved to Santa Monica, my days are extremely structured. I wake up at 4:30, work, eat lunch, finish work, go take photos, eat dinner, and go to bed around the same time. I’m even meal prepping, weighing my food like a nerd, and trying to keep a consistent workout schedule.

My life is very orderly.

But when I go out to photograph, I’m the complete opposite. I don’t have a plan. I’m perfectly happy walking around and photographing whatever catches my eye.

Maybe the fact that the rest of my life is so structured allows me to be completely free with photography.

The order creates the spontaneity.

And I think I need both. I need structure in my life to be productive, but I don’t need that structure in my photography.

Photography is where I get to let it go.
