Embracing the magazine mindset. And by that I mean all of the photos that I take, the expectation I put on myself is to place the photos that I take in a magazine.
Not all of them. A very low percentage of the photos I take actually make it into my Survey magazine.
But what this magazine mindset has opened up for me is it’s forced me to basically just take a variety of different photographs because I want the magazine to be a surprise every time you turn the page.
I want the viewer to be surprised, right?
So I try hard to get a lot of different styles and types of photography in there. What this does is it forces me to embrace different styles of photography.
For example, I really don’t like doing portraiture that much, but I engage in portraiture a lot more now because I want a couple portraits in each magazine.
So I just took this photo. I’ll show it to you.
I took a whole bunch, but something like this.
You see it?
I noticed her from across the street. I could see the smoke blowing out perfectly in the light. I got the silhouette of her face.
I took a whole bunch. I was just snapping away trying to get a good one, different angles, stuff like that.
So what the magazine mindset has allowed me to do is explore a different style of photography basically anytime I go out.
And the possibilities are just endless.
Think about the possibilities.
It’s good, I think, sometimes to put a limitation on yourself, but with all the possibilities, it’s like, why would you want to?
Everything is possible, right?
I mean, right here, let’s just take this spot I’m standing in right now as an example.
If I don’t even move my feet and all I do is twist my body around, move my arm, stay with the same focal length, put it in P mode and fire away, how many different photographs do you think I can make just in this one spot?
Just in this current second.
Let’s say I don’t even let time pass.
If I were able to take a whole bunch of photos all at once within a one-second time frame, guess how many different photos, how many different possibilities, are right here in this one spot?
I was using a chatbot to ask it this question, and one time it told me a number like four quadrillion.
I don’t even know what that is.
Another chatbot told me 17 million.
And that’s assuming that I don’t change any settings and I stay with the same focal length, right?
And that number infinitely increases the longer I stand here because I’ve got a car coming. I just had a guy walk past. The light slightly shifts.
There are all these different variables.
And then you can change all the different variables yourself by just fiddling with your camera settings if you want.
If you don’t want to shoot on P mode and want to do a higher ISO, or you want to do a slow shutter, whatever, there are just a million different options.
Different aperture, all that crap.
And so I think this scene right here, at the very least, right now, just in this second, there are 17 million possibilities for me to take a frame here.
I can make it different 17 million ways.
And so I’m just thinking, it’s nice to have limitations on something.
I like placing a limitation on myself with the 28mm, but why limit myself to the style of photography that I want to do?
And that is what the magazine mindset has opened up for me.
It’s like a whole different world.
I can basically explore anything I want to do, and there are just no limits.
There are zero limits.
Basically, it’s endless.
It’s like space, right?
Although I don’t know if space is limited. Is space finite? I don’t know.
But basically, whatever the most infinite resource is in existence right now is probably light.
Is light like this sun just beaming on my face?
That’s probably the most infinite resource that we can actually think about right now, until this thing burns out in however many billions or trillions of years. I don’t even know.
That’s probably the most infinite resource we have.
And it’s quite possible to think that this scene right here, that I’ve just been standing in for the last two minutes yapping away at, this scene right here has more possibilities to take a frame with this thing than that star that’s beaming down on me.
And if you really start to think about it, it’s just freaking wild.
It’s just so wild to think we have all these possibilities.
And so, yeah, that’s why I’m into the magazine mindset.
I would highly recommend adopting this mindset because basically the world just opens up for you.
