Can Dogs Sense Anger?

After being spat on and nearly pummeled by a large rock before I quickly got out of dodge I was then nearly attacked by a huge German Shepard. My mood veering towards anger at the ill who forced me into retreat and my ego bruised, the dog surely felt the anger inside of me and reacted in a protective way.
