10,000 Hours To Mastery

Malcolm Gladwell introduces this 10k hour rule. The key to achieving true expertise in any skill is simply a matter of practicing, albeit in the correct way, for at least 10 000 hours.

So I did a rough estimate of how much I’ve practiced street photography. I only started shooting in late October of 2019. I’m very new. There is also an emphasis on the “correct way” which is hard to determine. I shoot nearly everyday for a few hours. Some days more, some days less. But I kept it simple and calculated 3.5 years at two hours a day. It’s probably fairly accurate. I’m only at 2,500 hours. So at this pace, I’ll have achieved expertise in another 10 or so years. That’s pretty wild to think about but it’s probably accurate. I’ve just found my way in 2023. If the rule holds true, it’s reassuring to know that the best is yet to come and gives me even more motivation.
