Why Rules?

I was told today by the Santa Monica Pier security to not ride my bike on it “because a little girl was hurt.” The same pier that has cars driving on it. Sounds like a dumb rule to me and illogical. So why have all the dumb rules for taking your photos? “I don’t take photos of dogs, vendors, the homeless, cars, etc…” I’ve heard all of these rules. We live in a world full of rules and laws. Why limit yourself if you don’t have to. I’m not saying rules and laws are bad, the opposite in fact. A world with rule of law is important to manage society. Don’t believe me? Ask an anarchist about any currently run anarchist countries. Crickets…

So why all the rules when we are abiding by them on a daily basis. Just free yourself and go with the gut.

  1. Yes illogical rules are bad. As it was walking in 2020 with masks in empty streets for example. In photography these rules are a matter of time and changing with the fashion of the current popularity of a specific genre. Some time ago when the Googleplus was the thing, people often said that shooting ppl at street from back is not ethical. Same about homeless. Using flash was a taboo. Some people fought with those who photographed portraits of strangers. Some people said to ask dogs owners to take a photo of their pet. Some said that putting the subject in the center of the frame is against all the rules of photography. But who cares.

      1. Beautiful, I especially like that last one. Are you shooting Tri-X? I’m getting back into film and developing. Gnna start with HP5 pushed to 1600 with DD-X. Excited to start the new journey.
